Cannabis Jigsaw Puzzles: What 520 Pieces of Strain Art Looks Like

The cannabis jigsaw puzzle is the one product in our store that makes people laugh when they open the box. Then they see the piece count and go quiet. It is 520 pieces of one of my paintings, and it is rated difficult. Here is what you get, what it is like to build, and what to check before you buy one.

What you get

The cannabis jigsaw puzzle is 520 pieces with a finished size of 15.74 x 19.74 inches, a little under 16 x 20. The pieces are pressed paper chipboard, 0.06 inch thick, and the print has a semi-gloss finish. The blank parts are sourced from the US. You pick your strain from a menu of 23 designs, and each one sits on its own background color, so the box you get looks nothing like the box your friend got. One note before you order: this one ships to US addresses only. If your address is outside the US, pick a print or a blanket instead.

Why it is rated difficult

I paint the mature female flower of each strain, 24 x 30 acrylic on canvas. A flower is a lot of small shapes that look like other small shapes: trichomes, pistils, the shadows between the leaves. On a canvas that is the point. On a puzzle it means you will hold a piece up to the light and have no idea where it goes. The background is the easy part, since every design sits on one color. Do the edges first, then the background, then save the flower for last and sort by the color shifts. Purple Haze runs purple and green, Black Afghan sits on black, and Super Lemon Haze sits on bright yellow. If you want a head start, pick a strain where the flower and the background are far apart in color. If you want a fight, pick one where they are close.

Building your own painting

Building a puzzle of something you painted is strange. I know where every shadow goes, and I still get stuck. The painting was made at 24 x 30, so on the puzzle every brush stroke is smaller than I remember it, and a stroke that took one pull of the brush turns into three or four pieces. It is a good way to spend a rainy week in Florida, and it is a better way to learn a strain than reading about it. By the end you know exactly where the purple starts.

Framing a finished puzzle

The product page says it works as wall decor once assembled, and it does. Glue the front once it is done, let it dry flat, and it will hold together as one sheet. The finished size is 15.74 x 19.74 inches, so a 16 x 20 frame is the closest standard size, with a hair of room around the edge. The framed prints at our house are all in black frames, and black works on a puzzle too. From across the room it reads like a print. Up close people see the pieces and ask about it, which is the best part of hanging one.

If the puzzle is a gift

Match the strain to the person. If you do not know their strain, STRainbow is six strains in rainbow order and is the safe pick. Made to order

The puzzle is printed when you order it, which adds a few days but means nothing gets made that nobody wants.
